Supporting the MOD in the Falkland Islands
We supported an MOD contractor who was working on an electricity grid at an airbase in the Falkland Islands. Temporary power support was required while 39 x 11kV substations were being upgraded on the airbase.
The key requirement was that the generators needed to be robust and reliable, as any issues would be difficult to fix, due to limited support.
We worked with the customer to perform a cost and usage analysis to understand whether it would be better to hire or buy the generators during the 9-month project. We also invited him to visit our head office to see the units he was interested in buying in our hire fleet, to allow him to witness the units being tested first-hand.
The customer decided to purchase the generators to retain the asset capital after the project finished. We supplied 4 x 500kVA HIMOINSA units with upgraded controllers and motorised breakers to allow for synchronisation, as well as all cabling and ancillaries. This included additional alternator upgrades to improve phase imbalance, fully bunded fuel tanks and extended fuel tanks to allow for a buffer in the event of fuel shortages on the island.
To ensure the generators were properly maintained for the duration of the project, we also provided full servicing kit and maintenance training.
Our engineers pre-programmed the generators ready for shipping to the Falklands.
